SOME MORE NEWS FOR THE UPCOMING MONTHS ...
The Tiger Sharks have made a great come back this season, however we have not being seeing as many as we should and only found out a few days ago the reason for this. Our local fisherman are going out their and killing them for the fins and selling the rest of the shark for some rediculous amount of R25 per kg. Is that not a sad situation, we hope we have put a stop to this and will see more of our sharks on the reef in the future. We have spotted quite a few pregnant females and hope they got away from the fishermen. Some really large loggerhead male turtels have been sighted and we have about 6 brindle bass on the Produce. The visibility has been a fairly constant 20m, water temperature hasn't dropped below 26 degrees C, however we did get a few cold thermo clines with poor viz.
, which was quite interesting.
Coming up soon ....
For those of you planning on coming to visit us in the months of May and June ... the temperatures will start to drop as the days become shorter and the water temperature also starts to drop to any average of between 19 degrees C and 21 degrees C. The sardines will only be able to move up the coast when the temperature drops below 19 degrees C and stays like this for some time. This will indicate the cold nutrient up-welling and the sardines will follow this cold water up the coast from the Cape. If the temperature like previous years doesn't cool down, then we don't have very much activity along the shoreline.
The end of June may even see the start of the first humpback whales arriving from
the South. All the marine life will be in prepartaion for the Sardine Run, and then there will be lots of activity offshore. June is also the start of the Raggie Season. The males will usually be first on the scene and will be sparring for positions on the reef. Where they are from - we are not quite sure. The females wll be coming in from the Cape and Northern Natal shorty thereafter. May/June will be some of Aliwal Shoals best diving months of the year, with little to no wind, no rain and in general yeilding a calm sea.
Hope to see you all soon for some great diving.
